NYJ/NYG HS Football Coaches of the Week

Each week during the season, the Jets and Giants select a tri-state area coach of the week. Each program will receive a $1000 donation from the National Football League, and at the end of the year a Coach of the Year will be selected and his program will receive $2000.

NEW YORK JETS

Frank Kean – Eldred HS, NY
36th year; Career record: 125-146

In his final year of coaching at the Section 9 school, Eldred advanced to the State Class D finals for the first time in school history after beating Tuckahoe 21-14 last weekend. If you combine the mathematics teacher’s football, basketball and baseball head coaching jobs at the school it adds up to 108 years of coaching!

NEW YORK GIANTS

Tony Mascia – Holy Trinity HS, LI
20th year; 110 career victories

Mascia graduated from the Hicksville school in 1976, and this year he's brought the Titans back to the glory days of when he played. After Saturday’s 27-18 win over Iona Prep in the CHSFL semifinals, Holy Trinity improved to 10-0 and advanced to the CHSFL final for the first time in school history.

NEW BALANCE HSW PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSE

Brendan Miller – Glen Rock HS, NJ
Sr. QB – 5'9", 170 lbs.

The Panthers, who have produced their fair share of great QBs through the years, have another one in the first-year starter who put on a show in the North Jersey Group 2 quarterfinal win over Lenape Valley. Glen Rock, the eighth seed, beat the top-seeded Patriots 41-14 behind the running and passing of the straight-A student. The three-sport standout, who a year ago played WR for this team, tallied 390 yards of total offense, throwing for four TDs and running for two more.

DEFENSE

Kevin Furlong – Raritan HS, NJ
Sr. S – 6'1", 180 lbs.

The straight-A student came into the Central Jersey Group 2 quarterfinal game with just two interceptions during the regular season. He left with two more, returning both INTs for touchdowns in the 28-7 victory over Long Branch. The first-year starter turned a close game into a three TD win thanks to his 72-yard return in the third quarter and one of 57 yards in the fourth.
